It was Tuesday, just a week since Gabrielle’s death, and they were only visiting the last of the students today. Between their own busy schedules and actually finding times when the people would be in, it had taken them a whole week. Doubtless the police were well ahead of them, but they had heard nothing about any developments - even with Feargal having a mole in the station!

Today they were visiting West Malvern, to visit Linda the elderly ex-ballet-dancer, and Andrew, the young sports enthusiast. They couldn’t be more different yet surprisingly they lived in the same house. Andrew rented a room from Linda, to help eke out her pension. They were uncomplicated people and the arrangement suited both of them.

As Tamsin and Emerald arrived up the narrow road the sun was setting and the sky still streaked with the leftover clouds from the heavy rain on Sunday. So they paused to admire the magnificent sunset - something they never got to see on their side of the ancient Hills.

As with so many of the houses plastered up the western slopes of the Malvern Hills, there were large picture windows affording a splendid view of the darkening hills over towards Wales, now burnished with the sunset glow. In Linda’s case, these were French windows looking out onto the top shelf of her many-layered garden. A typical West Malvern garden cascading in steps down the steep hillside.

“You need to be fit to manage this garden, I’ll bet!” said Tamsin, after spending some time admiring the view.

“You do indeed,” agreed Linda, lithe and fit in the teeth of her years. “That’s one reason Andrew came here. Oh, I hear him coming down the stairs now.”

“I love gardens, and on my salary there was no hope of me acquiring one,” he smiled as he strode into the room, hand outstretched in greeting.

“And I needed a bit of company to keep me human! I’m short of things to do since I retired from teaching dance. This is a marriage made in Heaven. Andrew does all the heavy work, and I tend the plants and tell him what to do,” laughed Linda.

Tamsin and Emerald both relaxed in the easy presence of these two. Linda didn’t feel any social pressure to provide them with refreshment and they were all happy to stay near the windows as the sun gradually sank from view, making a fantastic display of reds, oranges, and violets on the jagged clouds filling the sky.

“This is wonderful!” said Emerald as she gazed at the display. “You see this all the time?”

“Well not all the time,” said Andrew, “but Mother Nature does a pretty good job of keeping us entertained. Sometimes I watch the sunset for so long that when I turn back into the room it appears pitch black. Time has moved on while I was caught up in the beauty.”

“Talking of beauty,” said Linda, “is there any news about poor Gabrielle? The police have been round here grilling us, but neither of us really had anything to offer.
